What is the Sunshine State Scoreboard?

Sunshine State Scoreboard is a column about college football in the Sunshine State. The protagonists are the state’s three oldest and most prestigious football programs: the University of Florida, Miami and Florida State University. The author, GatorBytes (whose human name is Bill), is a UF alumnus three times over who admits right up front that such journalistic niceties as impartiality aren’t exactly his guiding light, but he does strive to give each school its due. That’s because more beloved than his alma mater, it’s his native state, Florida, that he’s pulling for every Saturday afternoon, except when the three schools play each other. GatorBytes doesn’t pull any punches, either. He can get down on the Gators just as fast as he can get down on the Noles and Canes. But he admits that it’s UF, that gets most of his attention, positive and negative. And that’s how it should be. Long before there were Seminoles and pipe-smoking Ibises wearing sailor caps, the whole peninsula was Gator Country, as archaeologists have incontrovertibly shown from excavations such as the following:

Who Reads the Sunshine State Scoreboard?

Sunshine State Scoreboard has a state-wide circulation , and is published in the Village Center at Haile Plantation, Gainesville, Florida. Readers include fans of all three schools, sports writers and commentators, coaches, athletic directors, university presidents and others.  Players are not encouraged to subscribe, however, because GatorBytes doesn’t want to contribute to the barrage of inane distractions that these young, impressionable players already have to deal with, plus concentrate on a game that requires their total commitment, and go to school and still keep their heads on straight. For others, subscription is free, and it’s easy to subscribe or unsubscribe.

What Readers Have to Say

This website is a reflection of reader interest, and includes a page for reader’s comments. Not everyone, however, has exactly appreciated its humor. One university president asked to be removed from the mailing list right after receiving an edition that satirized his head ball coach. Interestingly, the coach and his three sons who are also coaches are still on the list. Most of the feedback, even from rabid Nole and Cane fans, has been appreciative. Another university president and long-time reader of GatorBytes had this to say:

Hi, Bill,

I am a big fan of yours, so keep the stuff coming.  You've got a good perspective, you tell it like you see it, and you're fun to read.  So I hope you keep me on your list.

John V. Lombardi, President, University of Florida
